Resmetirom (Rezdiffra – Madrigal), a thyroid hormone receptor-beta agonist, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for treatment of noncirrhotic nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with moderate to advanced fibrosis in adults. NASH has recently been renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Resmetirom is the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication.

The FDA has approved the subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha antagonist dupilumab (Dupixent – Sanofi/Regeneron) for add-on maintenance treatment of adults with inadequately controlled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and an eosinophilic phenotype. Dupilumab is the first biologic drug to be approved in the US for this indication. It has been available for years for treatment of asthma, atopic dermatitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic esophagitis, and prurigo nodularis.

Levocetirizine (Xyzal - UCB/Sanofi-aventis), the active enantiomer of the second-generation H₁-antihistamine cetirizine (Zyrtec), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (SAR and PAR) and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 6 years of age and older. Cetirizine has been approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use and may also become available generically in the US. Levocetirizine has been available in Europe since 2001.

The FDA has approved istradefylline (Nourianz — Kyowa Kirin), an oral adenosine A_2A receptor antagonist, for use as an adjunct to carbidopa/levodopa in adults with Parkinson's disease (PD) who experience "off" episodes. Istradefylline is the first adenosine A_2A receptor antagonist to be approved in the US; it has been available in Japan since 2013.

The main goals of treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations, prevent disease progression, and reduce mortality. GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) guidelines for treatment of COPD were updated recently. Treatment of acute exacerbations is not discussed here. Drugs available for treatment of COPD are listed in Tables 1 and 3.

Mupirocin (Bactroban - Beecham), a topical antibiotic formerly called pseudomonic acid, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of impetigo. It will be sold as a 2% ointment available only by prescription.

Mitoxantrone (Novantrone - Lederle), a synthetic anthracene related to the anthracyclines doxorubicin (Adriamycin) and daunorubicin (Cerubidine), has now been marketed in the USA to be used in combination with other drugs for initial treatment of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia in adults.

Mefloquine hydrochloride (Lariam - Roche), a new antimalarial drug chemically related to quinine, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for prevention and treatment of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria.

Felbamate (Felbatol - Wallace Laboratories), a phenyl dicarbamate structurally similar to meprobamate (Equanil, and others), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use alone or with other drugs in adults with partial seizures with or without secondary generalization. It was also approved for use in addition to other drugs in children with the multiple types of seizures associated with the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe epileptic encephalopathy.

Lamotrigine (la mo tri jeen; Lamictal - Burroughs Wellcome), a phenyltriazine derivative, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in addition to other antiepileptic drugs in adults with partial seizures. Since this diagnostic category includes the largest number of patients with intractable epilepsy, new drugs with antiepileptic activity are usually tried first for this indication. Lamotrigine was first marketed abroad in 1990 and is now available in more than 50 other countries.
