The FDA has approved the oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor ripretinib (Qinlock – Deciphera) for treatment of adults with advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) who have previously received treatment with ≥3 kinase inhibitors, including imatinib (Gleevec, and generics).

Patients with seasonal allergies often experience nasal itching and congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and itchy, watery eyes. Oral, intranasal, and ophthalmic preparations are widely available over the counter (OTC) for relief of symptoms. Sparfloxacin (Zagam - Rh ne-Poulenc Rorer) and levofloxacin (Levaquin - Ortho-McNeil) are the newest fluoroquinolone antimicrobials to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Sparfloxacin in a once-daily oral preparation is being marketed for treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Troglitazone (Rezulin - Parke-Davis), the first of a new class of thiazolidinedione derivatives ('glitazones') for diabetes, has been marketed for oral treatment of noninsulin- dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in patients who take more than 30 units of insulin daily and still have a glycosylated hemoglobin concentration (HbA1c) of 8.5% or higher.

Mibefradil dihydrochloride (Posicor - Roche), a chemically distinct nondihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is being heavily promoted as the first T-type calcium-channel blocker for treatment of hypertension and chronic stable angina.

The number of cough remedies available in the USA continues to multiply, but most products contain the same or similar ingredients in varying combinations. Most acute coughs do not require treatment with drugs, especially in children, and suppression of a productive cough may be harmful.

Nateglinide (Starlix), a new meglitinide oral glucose-lowering agent, has been approved by the FDA.

Sertaconazole nitrate (Ertaczo - OrthoNeutrogena), an imidazole antifungal similar to clotrimazole and miconazole, has been approved by the FDA as a 2% cream for topical treatment of interdigital tinea pedis infection. It has been available in Europe for many years.

The FDA has approved an oral, fixed-dose combination (Treximet - GlaxoSmithKline) of the selective serotonin receptor agonist ("triptan") sumatriptan (Imitrex) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) naproxen sodium (Anaprox, and others) for acute treatment of migraine attacks.

The antiplatelet drug clopidogrel (Plavix, and others) reduces major cardiovascular events, but can cause bleeding. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are often used with clopidogrel to prevent gastrointestinal bleeding, however, some evidence suggests that PPIs may interfere with the activation of clopidogrel and diminish its antiplatelet effect. FDA-approved labeling recommends avoiding concurrent use of the PPIs omeprazole and esomeprazole with clopidogrel.
