It is available for twice-daily treatment of pharyngitis, upper and lower respiratory infections, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and for single-dose treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea in men or women and anorectal gonorrhea in women.

Several new treatments are now available for actinic keratoses (AKs), scaly pink papules commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the face, scalp, forearms and dorsal surface of the hands, particularly in the elderly. Some AKs regress spontaneously, but a few may progress to squamous cell carcinoma; the risk of progression has been estimated to be about 0.25% to 1% per year (EWB Jeffes III and EH Tang, Am J Clin Dermatol 2000; 1:167).

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), an endocrine abnormality characterized by hyperandrogenism and anovulation, affects 5-10% of women of reproductive age in the US. It is often accompanied by obesity and insulin resistance. In recent years, antidiabetic drugs, although not approved for such use by the FDA, have been tried for treatment of this disorder.
