Octreotide acetate (Sandostatin - Sandoz), a synthetic octapeptide that mimics the actions of somatostatin, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for symptomatic treatment of patients with metastatic carcinoid or VIPomas (vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors).

The FDA has approved telotristat ethyl (Xermelo – Lexicon), a tryptophan hydroxylase inhibitor, for use in combination with a somatostatin analog (SSA) for treatment of carcinoid syndrome diarrhea inadequately controlled with SSA therapy alone. Telotristat ethyl is the first oral drug to be approved in the US for this indication.

The FDA has approved pegvisomant (Somavert Pfizer), a growth hormone receptor antagonist, for parenteral treatment of acromegaly in patients who are not candidates for or have had an inadequate response to surgery or other treatment. This review describes the disease of acromegaly and its standard treatment options. Also included are sections on the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, drug interactions, and the dosage and cost of pegvisomant. Results of clinical studies are discussed.
