The primary symptoms of menopause are genitourinary and vasomotor. The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) includes symptoms such as burning, irritation, dryness, dyspareunia, dysuria, and recurrent urinary tract infection. Vasomotor symptoms (VMS; hot flashes, night sweats) often disrupt sleep.

The FDA has approved cantharidin 0.7% solution (Ycanth – Verrica) for topical treatment of molluscum contagiosum in patients ≥2 years old. Ycanth was the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication. A 10.3% gel formulation of berdazimer (Zelsuvmi), a nitric oxide-releasing agent, has also been approved by the FDA for treatment of molluscum contagiosum (in patients ≥1 year old); it will be reviewed in a future issue.

Berdazimer 10.3% gel (Zelsuvmi – Ligand), a first-in-class nitric oxide-releasing agent, has been approved by the FDA for topical treatment of molluscum contagiosum in patients ≥1 year old. It is the second drug to become available in the US for treatment of molluscum contagiosum and the first that can be applied by the patient or caregiver at home; cantharidin 0.7% solution (Ycanth), which is applied by a healthcare professional, was approved earlier for use in patients ≥2 years old.

Omalizumab (Xolair – Genentech), a recombinant anti-IgE monoclonal antibody FDA-approved for treatment of allergic asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, and chronic urticaria, has now also been approved for use in conjunction with food allergen avoidance to reduce IgE-mediated food allergic reactions caused by accidental exposure in patients ≥1 year old. The FDA has approved Susvimo (Genentech), a refillable permanent ocular implant containing the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor ranibizumab, for treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in patients who have previously responded to at least two intravitreal injections of a VEGF inhibitor. Ranibizumab intravitreal injection (Lucentis) has been available since 2006 for monthly treatment of nAMD. Eohilia (Takeda), an oral suspension formulation of the corticosteroid budesonide, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in patients ≥11 years old. It is the first oral drug to be approved in the US for this indication. The subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-4 receptor antagonist dupilumab (Dupixent) is approved for treatment of EoE in patients ≥1 year old who weigh ≥15 kg.

The FDA has approved ibrexafungerp (Brexafemme – Scynexis), a first-in-class triterpenoid antifungal ("fungerp"), for oral treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis in postmenarchal females.

Faricimab-svoa (Vabysmo – Genentech), an inhibitor of both vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), has been approved by the FDA for intravitreal treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME). It is the first drug to become available in the US that targets two pathways involved in maintaining vascular homeostasis. Several VEGF inhibitors are available for treatment of nAMD and DME (see Table 2).

Pediculosis capitis (head lice infestations) occur in all age groups, but especially in elementary school children. In most cases, transmission occurs by head-to-head contact. Pharmacologic treatment is recommended for persons with live lice or eggs (nits) within 1 cm of the scalp. Topical pediculicides should be tried first. Oral therapy is occasionally required for refractory infestations.

Primary hypothyroidism is usually the result of Hashimoto's (autoimmune) thyroiditis, thyroidectomy, or radioactive iodine therapy. Treatment of hypothyroidism with replacement doses of thyroid hormone is usually lifelong. Levothyroxine (LT4; synthetic thyroxine; Synthroid, and others) is the drug of choice.1
