Since the implication of aspirin in Reye's syndrome, acetaminophen (Tylenol; and others) has become the standard drug for symptomatic treatment of fever and pain in children. Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) available for many years in tables (Mortin; Advil; and others), has now become available in a suspension. Captopril (Capoten - Bristol-Myers Squibb), an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor previously available for treatment of hypertension, has now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Diabetic nephropathy is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease in the United States.

An intranasal formulation of the corticosteroid budesonide (Rhinocort Nasal Inhaler - Astra) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children and nonallergic perennial rhinitis in adults. Budesonide has been available in Canada and Europe for several years for inhalation treatment of both allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Midodrine hydrochloride (ProAmatine - Roberts), an alpha1-selective adrenergic agonist, is now available for treatment of severe symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. Immune-mediated hemolysis is a rare adverse effect of second- and third-generation cephalosporins, especially cefotetan (Cefotan) (PA Arndt et al, Transfusion 1999; 39:1239).
