The FDA has approved edoxaban (Savaysa – Daiichi Sankyo), a once-daily, oral, direct factor Xa inhibitor, for treatment of venous thromoboembolism (VTE) and for prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is the fourth new oral anticoagulant to be approved for VTE and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.

The FDA has approved Byvalson (Allergan), a fixed-dose combination of the beta blocker nebivolol (Bystolic) and the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan (Diovan, and generics), for treatment of hypertension. It is the only combination product that contains nebivolol, and the first to combine a beta blocker with an ARB.

The FDA has approved the interleukin (IL)-6 inhibitor sarilumab (Kevzara – Sanofi) for second-line treatment of adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is the second IL-6 inhibitor to be approved for this indication; tocilizumab (Actemra) was approved earlier.

The FDA has approved Airsupra (AstraZeneca), a metered-dose inhaler containing the short-acting beta₂-agonist (SABA) albuterol and the inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) budesonide, for use as needed for treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to reduce the risk of exacerbations in patients ≥18 years old with asthma. Airsupra is the first combination of a SABA and an ICS to become available in the US. It is not approved for use as maintenance therapy.

Femlyv (Millicent), an orally disintegrating tablet containing ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone acetate, has been approved by the FDA for prevention of pregnancy in females with a body mass index (BMI) ≤35 kg/m². It is the first hormonal contraceptive to become available in an orally disintegrating tablet formulation. Traditional oral and chewable tablets containing ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone acetate in a wide range of doses, including those found in Femlyv, have been available in the US for years.

Drugs for gout are used to reduce the pain and inflammation of acute flares, decrease the frequency of exacerbations, and lower serum urate levels to prevent recurrent flares, development of tophi, and joint damage.

Cefpodoxime proxetil (Vantin - Upjohn), a new third-generation oral cephalosporin, has been approved for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is available for twice-daily treatment of pharyngitis, upper and lower respiratory infections, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and for single-dose treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea in men or women and anorectal gonorrhea in women.

Terbinafine (Lamisil - Sandoz), an allylamine synthetic antifungal, previously available in the USA in a topical formulation (Medical Letter, 35:76, 1993) has now been marketed for oral use in the treatment of fungal nail infections caused by dermatophytes. Oral terbinafine has been available in Europe since 1992.

The FDA has approved a conjugate heptavalent pneumococcal vaccine for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease in infants and children.

Apomorphine (Apokyn - Mylan/Bertek), an injected non-ergot dopamine agonist, was recently approved by the FDA for intermittent subcutaneous (SC) treatment of hypomobility ("off" episodes) in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. It has been available in Europe for many years.
