Gemtuzumab ozogamicin, a monoclonal antibody bound to a cytotoxic antibiotic, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with CD33-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first relapse who are more than 60 years old and may not be able to tolerate cytotoxic chemotherapy

Pegloticase (Krystexxa – Savient), a PEGylated urate oxidase enzyme, has been approved by the FDA for intravenous (IV) treatment of chronic symptomatic gout in adults who have not responded to maximum doses of a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, such as allopurinol (Zyloprim, and others). Pegloticase is the second new drug approved for gout in more than 40 years; a new xanthine oxidase inhibitor, febuxostat (Uloric), was approved in 2009.

The FDA has approved Vaxchora (PaxVax), a single-dose, oral, live-attenuated cholera vaccine, to protect against disease caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 in adults 18-64 years old traveling to cholera-affected areas. Vaxchora is the only cholera vaccine available in the US. A whole-cell killed injectable vaccine was previously approved, but is no longer available in the US.

Palivizumab (Synagis - MedImmune), an injectable monoclonal antibody, has been marketed in the USA since 1999 for prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) disease in high-risk infants and children.

Nelarabine (Arranon - GlaxoSmithKline), a prodrug of the deoxyguanosine analog 9-β-D-arabinofuranosylguanine (ara-G), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) that has not responded to, or has relapsed following, treatment with at least two chemotherapy regimens.

The Medical Letter article (Med Lett Drugs Ther 2007; 49:71) on Low-Dose Transdermal Estrogens said that Elestrin has been marketed in Europe since 1976. Actually it is EstroGel (Ascend Therapeutics), a similar product, that has been available in Europe since 1976.

The FDA has approved a new 2.5-mg formulation of the direct factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban (Xarelto – Janssen) for use in combination with low-dose aspirin to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in patients with chronic coronary artery disease (CAD) or peripheral artery disease (PAD). Rivaroxaban is the first direct oral anticoagulant to be approved for this indication. Colchicine (Colcrys, and others), which has been available in the US for decades for prophylaxis and treatment of gout flares and other indications in oral formulations that contain 0.6 mg of the drug, has now been approved in 0.5-mg tablets as Lodoco (Agepha) to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, coronary revascularization, and cardiovascular death in adults with established atherosclerotic disease or multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The severity and rapid spread of COVID-19 (caused by SARS-CoV-2) have raised questions about the use of some drugs in patients with the disease and whether currently available drugs could be effective in treating it. The FDA has approved rivaroxaban (Xarelto – Janssen), an oral direct factor Xa inhibitor, for prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery.
