pulmonary disease (COPD) are to relieve symptoms,
reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations,
prevent disease progression, and reduce mortality.
GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung
Disease) guidelines for treatment of COPD were
updated recently. Treatment of acute exacerbations
is not discussed here. Drugs available for treatment

increase excretion of heavy metals. The Medical Letter’s
last article on this subject found no evidence that it was
effective for treatment of cardiovascular disease. Since
then, off-label use of chelation therapy has expanded to
include treating children with autism and adults with
Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and other chronic
diseases.

are at increased risk for severe RSV disease through
