Sapropterin (Kuvan - BioMarin) has been approved by the FDA to reduce phenylalanine plasma concentrations in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is a rare genetic disorder (it occurs in 1 in 8000 Caucasian and 1 in 50,000 African-American newborns) caused by a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) the resulting high levels of the amino acid in blood and urine lead to cognitive, behavioral and other neurological complications.

The FDA has approved golimumab (Simponi – Janssen), a fully human monoclonal antibody specific for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, for induction and maintenance of remission in patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis who do not respond to or cannot tolerate other therapies or who require continuous treatment with corticosteroids. Golimumab was approved earlier for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is the third TNF inhibitor to be approved for use in ulcerative colitis.

The FDA has approved avelumab (Bavencio – EMD Serono) and durvalumab (Imfinzi – AstraZeneca), two new immune check point inhibitors, and pembrolizumab (Keytruda – Merck), a checkpoint inhibitor that has been available in the US since 2014, for treatment of locally advanced or metastatic bladder cancer. Insulin glargine-yfgn (Semglee – Viatris), a follow-on insulin glargine product, has now received interchangeability status with the reference product Lantus from the FDA.
