Vilazodone (Viibryd – Forest), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and partial 5-HT_1A receptor agonist, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of depression. It has been claimed to have no sexual side effects and not to cause weight gain.

The FDA has approved insulin degludec (Tresiba – Novo Nordisk) for treatment of adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Insulin degludec is the third long-acting human insulin analog to be approved by the FDA; insulin detemir (Levemir) and insulin glargine (Lantus, Toujeo) were approved earlier.

The FDA has approved darolutamide (Nubeqa – Bayer), an androgen receptor inhibitor, for oral treatment of nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC). Darolutamide is the third androgen receptor inhibitor to be approved for this indication; apalutamide (Erleada) and enzalutamide (Xtandi), which are also approved for use in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), were approved earlier.

The FDA has approved an intracameral implant containing the prostaglandin analog bimatoprost (Durysta – Allergan) for reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Bimatoprost is also available in 0.01% (Lumigan) and 0.03% (generics) ophthalmic solutions for the same indication and in a 0.03% solution (Latisse, and generics) for eyelash enhancement. Durysta is the first ocular implant to become available in the US for treatment of glaucoma.

The FDA has approved insulin lispro-aabc (Lyumjev – Lilly), a faster-acting formulation of insulin lispro (Humalog), for treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults. Fiasp, a faster-acting formulation of insulin aspart (Novolog), was approved in 2017.

The FDA has approved the intravenously administered synthetic vasopressin analog terlipressin (Terlivaz – Mallinckrodt) to improve kidney function in adults with hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) and a rapid decline in kidney function. Terlipressin is the first drug to be approved for this indication in the US; it has been available in Europe and elsewhere for year

The FDA has approved Vizz (Lenz Therapeutics), a 1.44% ophthalmic solution of the cholinergic agonist aceclidine, for treatment of presbyopia in adults. Aceclidine has been available in the EU for years for treatment of open-angle glaucoma.

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the marketing of 5% doxepin hydrochloride cream (Zonalon - GenDerm) for treatment of pruritus due to eczematous dermatoses. Oral doxepin is used as a tricyclic antidepressant (Sinequan, and others).

Reports of increased mortality associated with calcium-channel blockers have caused concerns among patients taking these drugs and their physicians.

Rituximab (Rituxan - IDEC Pharmaceutical/Genentech), a monoclonal antibody, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Most low-grade lymphomas are B-cell lymphomas.
