The FDA has approved elacestrant (Orserdu – Stemline), an oral estrogen receptor antagonist, for treatment of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1)-mutated advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women or men who had disease progression following endocrine therapy. In the printed version of our article entitled Antiviral Drugs for Influenza for 2023-2024 in issue 1689 (Med Lett Drugs Ther 2023; 65:177), the clinical studies section should have included a meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials in 6295 outpatient adolescents and adults with influenza that found that use of oseltamivir did not reduce the risk of hospitalization in the overall population or in those ≥65 years old compared to placebo or standard of care. An intranasal spray formulation of the corticosteroid fluticasone propionate (floo tik a sone; Flonase - Allen & Hanburys) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children more than 12 years old.

Formoterol fumarate inhalation powder Foradil Aerolizer, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has been approved by the FDA for maintenance treatment of asthma and prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm. The drug has been available in Europe for many years.

Two controlled-release formulations of triptorelin (trip toe rel' in) pamoate, an agonist analog of human luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), are now available in the US for parenteral treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Trelstar Depot is given every 4 weeks and Trelstar LA every 12 weeks. Triptorelin has been available in some countries since 1986.

Tazarotene (taz ar' oh teen, Tazorac - Allergan), an acetylinic retinoid marketed for treatment of psoriasis (Medical Letter 1997; 39:105), is also available as a 0.1% gel and cream for treatment of acne.

Eplerenone (e pler' en one; Inspra - Pharmacia), an aldosterone receptor antagonist similar to spironolactone (Aldactone, and others), has been approved by the FDA, but not yet marketed, for treatment of hypertension. It has also been tried for treatment of heart failure.

The FDA has approved an extended-release (XR) formulation of the benzodiazepine alprazolam (Xanax XR - Pfizer) for treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. The new formulation is intended to reduce the need for frequent dosing and problems of interdose anxiety. This review describes the effectiveness of the extended-release formulation, as well as sections on dependence, abuse and withdrawal, adverse effects, and drug interactions. Bortezomib (PS341; Velcade Millenium), the first proteasome inhibitor, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for treatment of refractory multiple myeloma. The FDA has approved an extended-release formulation of amoxicillin (Moxatag – MiddleBrook) for once-daily treatment of pharyngitis or tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in adults and children ≥12 years old.
