Nabilone, an oral synthetic cannabinoid similar to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, has recently been reintroduced to the US market (Cesamet - Valeant) after a 17-year absence. The previous manufacturer discontinued marketing of the drug for commercial reasons. Nabilone is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance.

The FDA has approved suvorexant (Belsomra – Merck), the first orexin receptor antagonist to become available in the US, for treatment of sleep-onset and/or sleep-maintenance insomnia.

The FDA has approved stiripentol (Diacomit – Biocodex) for treatment of seizures in patients ≥2 years old with Dravet syndrome who are also taking clobazam (Onfi). The FDA has approved two new oral formulations of testosterone undecanoate — Kyzatrex (Marius) and Tlando (Antares) — for treatment of males with a deficiency of endogenous testosterone due to conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome, orchiectomy, toxic damage from chemotherapy or alcohol, or pituitary-hypothalamic injury caused by tumors, trauma, or radiation. Fibrates, niacin and fish oil are promoted for treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) can lower elevated serum concentrations of triglycerides, but less so than fibrates, niacins or fish oil. Lifestyle changes such as weight reduction, exercise and decreasing alcohol intake can also lower serum triglyceride levels and should be tried first.

The FDA has approved Winlevi (Sun), a 1% cream formulation of the androgen receptor inhibitor clascoterone, for treatment of acne vulgaris in patients ≥12 years old. It is the first topical androgen receptor inhibitor to be approved by the FDA.

Eszopiclone (Lunesta - Sepracor), a benzodiazepine-like drug, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of insomnia. It is the S-isomer of zopiclone (Imovane, and others in Canada), which has been available in other countries for almost 20 years. Unlike similar drugs such as zolpidem (Ambien) or zaleplon (Sonata), Lunesta is not being restricted in its labeling to short-term use. Like other hypnotics, eszopiclone is a schedule IV drug.

The FDA has approved the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor ertugliflozin (Merck) for treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes, both alone (Steglatro) and in fixed-dose combinations with metformin (Segluromet) and sitagliptin (Steglujan). Ertugliflozin is the fourth SGLT2 inhibitor to be approved in the US. All four are available in combination with metformin and three are available in combination with a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor (see Table 3).
