Tirbanibulin, a microtubule inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA as a 1% ointment (Klisyri – Almirall) for topical treatment of actinic keratosis of the face or scalp.

The FDA has approved daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm (Daxxify – Revance), an acetylcholine release inhibitor and neuromuscular blocking agent, for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar (frown) lines associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity. The FDA has approved an oral tablet formulation of deferasirox (Jadenu [ jade' new] – Novartis) for once-daily treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions (transfusional hemosiderosis) in patients ≥2 years old or chronic iron overload in patients ≥10 years old with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes. The PCSK9 inhibitor evolocumab (Repatha – Amgen) is now available in a single-dose, hands-free device (Repatha Pushtronex) for once-monthly subcutaneous infusion. Topical minoxidil (Rogaine, and others), which is available over the counter, has been used for treatment of hair loss in men and women for more than 30 years. Recently published trials suggest that off-label use of a low dose of oral minoxidil may also be effective.

Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin - Glaxo), an oral form of the second-generation parenteral cephalosporin cefuroxime (Zinacef), was recently marketed in the USA. Previously available oral cephalosporins are the first-generation drugs cephalexin (Keflex; and others), cephradine (Anspor; and others) and cefadroxil (Duricef; and others), and the second-generation cefaclor (Ceclor); second-generation cephalosporins have more activity against gram-negative bacteria.

Cefpodoxime proxetil (Vantin - Upjohn), a new third-generation oral cephalosporin, has been approved for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is available for twice-daily treatment of pharyngitis, upper and lower respiratory infections, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and for single-dose treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea in men or women and anorectal gonorrhea in women.

Several new treatments are now available for actinic keratoses (AKs), scaly pink papules commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the face, scalp, forearms and dorsal surface of the hands, particularly in the elderly. Some AKs regress spontaneously, but a few may progress to squamous cell carcinoma; the risk of progression has been estimated to be about 0.25% to 1% per year (EWB Jeffes III and EH Tang, Am J Clin Dermatol 2000; 1:167).

Sertaconazole nitrate (Ertaczo - OrthoNeutrogena), an imidazole antifungal similar to clotrimazole and miconazole, has been approved by the FDA as a 2% cream for topical treatment of interdigital tinea pedis infection. It has been available in Europe for many years.
