The FDA has approved the fixed-dose combination of tezacaftor and ivacaftor (Symdeko – Vertex) for oral treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients ≥12 years old who are homozygous for the F508del (also called Phe508del or ΔF508) mutation or have at least one mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene that is responsive to the combination. Some recently published studies suggest that taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. A relationship between SSRIs and osteoporosis is biologically plausible because bone has serotonin receptors, and SSRI-treated mice have reduced bone mass.

Formoterol fumarate (Perforomist - Dey), a long-acting beta₂-agonist, was recently approved by the FDA as an inhalation solution for nebulization for maintenance treatment of bronchoconstriction associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Arformoterol (Brovana), the (R, R)-enantiomer of formoterol, was approved earlier this year for the same indication.

Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (Vyvanse - Shire), a prodrug in which d-amphetamine is covalently bonded to L-lysine, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6-12 years old. It was designed to have less potential than amphetamine itself for abuse, diversion or overdose toxicity. Like methylphenidate and amphetamines, lisdexamfetamine is a Schedule II controlled substance.

Bendamustine HCl (Treanda - Cephalon), an unusual DNA-alkylating agent that has been used in Europe for many years to treat lymphoma, has now been approved by the FDA for treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

A combination of the corticosteroid budesonide and the long-acting beta₂-agonist formoterol (Symbicort - AstraZeneca) has become available in a metered dose inhaler for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma in patients ≥ 12 years old. A combination product that contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol (Advair) is already available for this indication in the US. Neither one of these combinations is approved for acute treatment of asthma symptoms. A dry powder inhaler formulation of Symbicort has been available in Europe and Canada for several years.

Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of thromboembolic stroke. Anticoagulant therapy can reduce this risk and is recommended for patients with atrial fibrillation and one or more of the following: congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes, or prior stroke or transient ischemic attack (CHADS₂ score ≥1).

The FDA has approved tavaborole 5% solution (Kerydin – Anacor Pharmaceuticals) for topical treatment of toenail onychomycosis due to Trichophyton rubrum or Trichophyton mentagrophytes. It is the first oxaborole antifungal drug to be approved for this indication.

Flosequinan (Manoplax - Boots), a fluoroquinolone derivative, is now available in the USA for treatment of congestive heart failure. Labeling approved by the US Food and Drug Administration recommends the drug only for patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded adequately to an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
