The FDA has approved Onzetra Xsail (Avanir), a nasal powder formulation of sumatriptan, for acute treatment of migraine in adults. Nasal spray formulations of sumatriptan (Imitrex) and zolmitriptan (Zomig) have been available for many years.

Antiretroviral therapy is recommended for all HIV-infected patients, both to reduce the risk of disease progression and to prevent transmission of the virus to others. Various guidelines for treatment of HIV infection are available.

The FDA has approved a second extended-release (ER) formulation of the oral opioid agonist hydrocodone (Hysingla ER – Purdue) for management of pain severe enough to require continuous long-term therapy and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. Hysingla ER tablets have abuse-deterrent properties to discourage their misuse.

Disodium pamidronate (Aredia - Ciba-Geigy), an aminohydroxypropilidene bisphosphonate, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for intravenous (IV) treatment of hypercalcemia associated with malignancy, with or without bone metastases. The drug is also being investigated for use in Paget's disease of bone, hyperparathyroidism, and postmenopausal osteoporosis. An oral formulation of pamidronate has been used in Europe, but is not available in the USA.

The FDA has approved 2 new treatments for castration-resistant (formerly called hormone-refractory) prostate cancer. Sipuleucel-T (Provenge – Dendreon) is the first immunotherapy approved for treatment of prostate cancer. Cabazitaxel (Jevtana – Sanofi-Aventis) is approved for second-line treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel (Taxotere).

The FDA has approved eluxadoline (Viberzi – Actavis), a mu-opioid receptor agonist and delta-opioid receptor antagonist, for oral treatment of adults with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

The lipid-lowering drug rosuvastatin is now available in a sprinkle capsule formulation (Ezallor Sprinkle – Sun Pharma). Rosuvastatin tablets (Crestor, and generics) have been available since 2003.1,2The new formulation is being marketed specifically for residents of long-term care facilities who have difficulty swallowing. Montelukast sodium (Singulair - Merck), a leukotriene receptor antagonist, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and children at least 6 years old. It is the third 'leukotriene modifier' to become available in the USA; zafirlukast (Accolate - Medical Letter, 38:111, 1996) and zileuton (Zyflo - Medical Letter, 39:18, 1997) were marketed previously. The FDA has approved release of omalizumab (oh mah lye zoo mab; Xolair - Genentech, Novartis), a humanized monoclonal antibody given subcutaneously that binds to immunoglobulin E (IgE). The drug is labeled for patients at least 12 years old with moderate to severe persistent asthma who have shown reactivity to an allergen and whose symptoms are inadequately controlled by an inhaled corticosteroid. The manufacturer claims the drug can help stop allergic reactions before they begin.
