The FDA has approved daclizumab (Zinbryta – Biogen/Abbvie), an interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor blocking monoclonal antibody, for treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is the first subcutaneously injected monoclonal antibody to be approved for treatment of MS.

Lispro insulin (Humalog - Lilly), a synthetic insulin analog, has been approved for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration. Prepared by recombinant DNA methods using E. coli, lispro differs from human insulin in having lysine and proline at positions 28 and 29 on the beta-chain, reversed from their natural position. The new drug has biologic effects similar to unmodified insulin, but is absorbed more rapidly after subcutaneous injection.

Glofitamab-gxbm (Columvi – Genentech), a bispecific CD20-directed CD3 T-cell engager, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for IV treatment of relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, or large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) arising from follicular lymphoma after ≥2 lines of systemic therapy. Alprazolam (Xanax - Upjohn), a triazolobenzodiazepine previously available in the USA for treatment of anxiety (Medical Letter 24:41, 1982), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. According to one report, alprazolam was the fifth most widely prescribed drug in the USA last year (American Medical News, March 4, 1991, page 4).

The FDA has approved Vaxchora (PaxVax), a single-dose, oral, live-attenuated cholera vaccine, to protect against disease caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 in adults 18-64 years old traveling to cholera-affected areas. Vaxchora is the only cholera vaccine available in the US. A whole-cell killed injectable vaccine was previously approved, but is no longer available in the US.

Levalbuterol, the R-isomer of racemic albuterol, has been approved by the FDA for prevention and treatment of bronchospasm in patients at least 12 years old.

Rifaximin (Xifaxan - Salix), a non-absorbed oral antibiotic derived from rifampin (Rifadin, and others), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of travelers' diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli in patients 12 years of age or older. It has been available in Europe since 1987.

The FDA has approved zavegepant nasal spray (Zavzpret – Pfizer) for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Zavzpret is the first nasal spray formulation of a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist ("gepant") to become available in the US.

The FDA has approved Viekira Pak (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of two new direct-acting antiviral agents (ombitasvir, paritaprevir) with the pharmacologic enhancer ritonavir in one tablet, co-packaged with a third new direct-acting antiviral agent (dasabuvir) in a second tablet, for oral treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Genotype 1 is responsible for 70-80% of HCV infections in the US.

Only a small minority of patients who say they are allergic to penicillin will have a reaction if they take a penicillin.
