Gonadorelin (goe nad oh rell'; in) acetate (Lutrepulse - Ortho), a synthetic decapeptide identical in amino acid sequence to human gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of primary hypothalamic amenorrhea. Gonadorelin hydrochloride (Factrel) was previously available for diagnostic use (Medical Letter, 25:106, 1983). Analogs of GnRH have been used to treat endometriosis and advanced cancer of the prostate (Medical Letter, 27:71, 1985).

The FDA has approved several significant changes in the labeling of mifepristone (Mifeprex – Danco), an oral antiprogestin that has been used in the US for more than 15 years for termination of intrauterine pregnancy. It has generally been used with the prostaglandin analog misoprostol (Cytotec, and generics).

Most patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) present with the relapsing-remitting form of the disease. Pharmacologic treatment usually includes a disease-modifying drug, corticosteroids for acute exacerbations, and other drugs for managing symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and pain.
