Taclonex ointment (Warner Chilcott/LEO Pharma), a combination of the vitamin D3 analog calcipotriene 0.005% (Dovonex) and the high-potency corticosteroid betamethasone dipropionate 0.064%, was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of psoriasis vulgaris in patients ≥ 18 years old.

The FDA has approved the subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha antagonist dupilumab (Dupixent – Sanofi/Regeneron) for treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in patients ≥12 years old who weigh ≥40 kg and treatment of prurigo nodularis in adults. Dupilumab is the first drug to be approved in the US for each of these indications. It is also FDA-approved for treatment of atopic dermatitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis.

The FDA has approved a rectal foam formulation of the corticosteroid budesonide (Uceris - Salix/Valeant) for induction of remission in patients with active mild to moderate distal ulcerative colitis (UC) extending up to 40 cm from the anal verge. Budesonide is also available as oral extended-release tablets (also branded as Uceris) for use in patients with UC and as oral enteric-coated tablets (Entocort EC, and generics) for treatment of Crohn's disease.

An intranasal formulation of the corticosteroid triamcinolone (Nasacort - Rh ne- Poulenc Rorer) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for once-daily treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

An intranasal spray formulation of the topical corticosteroid mometasone furoate, marketed for treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, has been advertised on television directly to the public.

The FDA has approved Otovel (Arbor), a combination of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin 0.3% and the corticosteroid fluocinolone acetonide 0.025%, for otic treatment of acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes (AOMT) in children ≥6 months old. It is the second fluoroquinolone/corticosteroid combination to be approved for this indication; ciprofloxacin 0.3%/dexamethasone 0.1% (Ciprodex) has been available for many years. The FDA has approved lebrikizumab-lbkz (Ebglyss – Lilly), a subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-13 antagonist, for treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis that has not been or cannot be adequately treated with topical therapy in patients ≥12 years old (weight ≥40 kg). Lebrikizumab is the third subcutaneously injected human IgG4 monoclonal antibody to be approved in the US for this indication. Eohilia (Takeda), an oral suspension formulation of the corticosteroid budesonide, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in patients ≥11 years old. It is the first oral drug to be approved in the US for this indication. The subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-4 receptor antagonist dupilumab (Dupixent) is approved for treatment of EoE in patients ≥1 year old who weigh ≥15 kg.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two new retinoids for treatment of psoriasis. Tazarotene gel 0.05% and 0.1% (Tazorac - Allergan) is being marketed for topical use in patients with stable, mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. Acitretin (Soriatane - Roche) is being promoted for systemic use in severe psoriasis.

Solar ultraviolet (UV) light capable of injuring the skin is classified by wavelength into UVA I (340-400 nm), UVA II (320-340 nm) and UVB (290-320 nm). UVB is responsible for most of the erythema of sunburn. UVA has been implicated in the development of phototoxicity and photoaging. The FDA permits sunscreen manufacturers to claim broad-spectrum protection if their products block at least part of UVA II in addition to UVB.
