Flosequinan (Manoplax - Boots), a fluoroquinolone derivative, is now available in the USA for treatment of congestive heart failure. Labeling approved by the US Food and Drug Administration recommends the drug only for patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded adequately to an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.

The FDA has approved Entresto (Novartis), an oral fixed-dose combination of the neprilysin inhibitor sacubitril and the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Sacubitril is the first neprilysin inhibitor to become available in the US.

Benazepril (Lotensin - Ciba-Geigy), fosinopril (Monopril - Mead Johnson), and - Hoechst, Upjohn) are new angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for once-a-day treatment of hypertension. Three other ACE inhibitors, captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), and lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) were previously available in the USA for this indication. Ziac (Lederle), a combination of the beta-blocker bisoprolol fumarate and a very low dose (6.25 mg) of the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, has been approved for treatment of hypertension by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Moexipril hydrochloride (Univasc - Schwarz Pharma), an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of. It is the eighth ACE inhibitor to be marketed in the USA.

The FDA has approved fixed-dose combinations of metformin with either canagliflozin (Invokamet) or dapagliflozin (Xigduo XR) for treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes not adequately controlled with any one of these drugs, or in those already being treated with both metformin and either canagliflozin or dapagliflozin.

The FDA has approved diazoxide choline extended-release tablets (Vykat XR – Soleno Therapeutics) for treatment of hyperphagia in patients ≥4 years old with Prader-Willi syndrome. Diazoxide choline is the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication. Diazoxide oral suspension (Proglycem) has been available for years for management of symptomatic hypoglycemia.

The FDA has approved a sublingual tablet (Nocdurna – Ferring) and a nasal spray (Noctiva – Avadel) formulation of desmopressin acetate for treatment of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria in adults who wake up ≥2 times per night to void. Nocdurna and Noctiva are the first two products to be approved in the US for this indication. A combination of the corticosteroid budesonide and the long-acting beta₂-agonist formoterol (Symbicort - AstraZeneca) has become available in a metered dose inhaler for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma in patients ≥ 12 years old. A combination product that contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol (Advair) is already available for this indication in the US. Neither one of these combinations is approved for acute treatment of asthma symptoms. A dry powder inhaler formulation of Symbicort has been available in Europe and Canada for several years.
