Brolucizumab-dbll (Beovu — Novartis), a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA as an intravitreal injection for treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is the fourth VEGF inhibitor to be approved in the US for this indication; bevacizumab (Avastin, and others), a VEGF inhibitor FDA-approved for treatment of breast cancer and other malignancies, has been used off-label for this indication for years.

The FDA has approved an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) formulation of rimegepant (Nurtec ODT – Biohaven), a small-molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist ("gepant"), for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Oliceridine (Olinvyk - Trevena), an IV opioid agonist, has been approved by the FDA for management of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate.

The Vibrant orally administered vibrating capsule (Vibrant Gastro), an FDA-cleared medical device, is now available by prescription for treatment of adults with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) who have not experienced relief of their bowel symptoms by using laxative therapies at the recommended dosage for at least one month. It is the first drug-free treatment to be authorized by the FDA for this indication.

Elafibranor (Iqirvo – Ipsen), a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonist, has been granted accelerated approval by the FDA for treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in adults. It is indicated for use in combination with ursodeoxycholic acid (ursodiol, UDCA; Urso, and others) in patients with an inadequate response to UDCA alone and as monotherapy in those unable to tolerate UDCA.

About 50% of the world’s population is infected with Helicobacter pylori. These gastric bacteria can cause chronic inflammation and have been associated with development of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Eradication of H. pylori can promote gastric healing, prevent recurrence of duodenal and gastric ulcers, and reduce the incidence of gastric cancer.
