The choice of drugs in Table I is based on the opinions of Medical Letter consultants. Sildenafil citrate (Viagra - Pfizer) is the first oral drug approved by the FDA for treatment of erectile dysfunction. Alprostadil is also marketed for this indication but must be injected into the corpus cavemosum (Caverject) or pushed into the urethra (MUSE).

In overactive bladder, involuntary bladder contractions due to detrusor overactivity result in urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, and incontinence. Many drugs can cause psychiatric symptoms, but a causal connection is often difficult to establish. Psychiatric symptoms that emerge during drug treatment could also be due to the underlying illness, previously unrecognized psychopathology, or psychosocial factors. The withdrawal of some drugs can cause symptoms such as anxiety, psychosis, delirium, agitation or depression.

About 60% of men ≥60 years old have clinically relevant prostatic enlargement due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The goals of treatment are to decrease lower urinary tract symptoms and to prevent disease progression and complications such as acute urinary retention.
