Methamphetamine, a highly addictive synthetic sympathomimetic, has again become important as a drug of abuse in the US. Its resurgence has been associated with unsafe sexual practices that have resulted in an increase in HIV transmission, particularly among men who have sex with men (SJ Semple et al, J Subst Abuse Treat 2002; 22:149; A Urbina and K Jones, Clin Infect Dis 2004; 38:890).

Patients are asking physicians about an article on the front page of the June 15th New York Times, in which some prostate cancer experts were quoted as suggesting that men 55 and older might be well advised to take finasteride (Proscar, and others) to prevent prostate cancer.

The FDA has approved a fixed-dose combination (Harvoni [har voe' nee] – Gilead) of sofosbuvir and ledipasvir (led' i pas' vir), two oral direct-acting antiviral agents, for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Genotype 1 is responsible for 70-80% of HCV infections in the US. Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) was approved earlier for use in combination with other antiviral drugs for treatment of HCV infection. Ledipasvir is a new drug.

Flecainide (Tambocor -3M Pharmaceuticals), first introduced in 1985 for treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for oral use to prevent supraventricular arrhythmias. The indications for using flecainide to treat ventricular arrhythmias were limited after a controlled trial found that post-myocardial infarction patients with asymptomatic ventricular arrhythmias who took the drug had twice as high a mortality rate as patients who took placebo (DS Echt et al, N Engl Med, 324:781, 1991).

Torsemide, a new loop diuretic similar in action to bumetanide (Bumex) and furosemide, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of edema due to congestive heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease and also for treatment of hypertension. Penciclovir 1% cream (Denavir - SmithKline Beecham) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of recurrent orolabial herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in adults.
