The FDA has approved a low-dose formulation of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine mesylate (Brisdelle – Noven Therapeutics) for treatment of moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. The FDA has approved a higher-dose injectable formulation of the opioid antagonist naloxone (Zimhi – Adamis) for emergency treatment of opioid overdose. A single IM or SC injection of the new formulation delivers 5 mg of naloxone; injectable formulations that deliver 0.4 mg or 2 mg of the drug have been available for years. Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a central-nervous-system depressant notorious for its use in "date rape", was approved by the FDA in 2002 as sodium oxybate (Xyrem - Jazz Pharmaceuticals) for oral treatment of cataplexy in patients with narcolepsy. Now it has also been approved for treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in these patients. Xyrem is a Schedule III controlled substance.
