Enoxacin (en ox' a sin; Penetrex - Rh ne-Poulenc Rorer), a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial for oral use, has now been marketed in the USA for treatment of urinary tract infections and uncomplicated urethral or cervical gonorrhea.

Terbinafine (Lamisil - Sandoz), an allylamine synthetic antifungal, previously available in the USA in a topical formulation (Medical Letter, 35:76, 1993) has now been marketed for oral use in the treatment of fungal nail infections caused by dermatophytes. Oral terbinafine has been available in Europe since 1992.

Lasers have been used in dermatology for many years. Recently, however, improvements in laser technology have led to much wider use of lasers for treatment of cosmetic skin problems. Many different types of lasers are available; the US Food and Drug Administration gives manufacturers permission to market laser systems for specific indications.

Ophthalmic formulations of ketotifen fumarate (Zaditor), pemirolast potassium (Alamast) and nedocromil sodium (Alocril) have recently been approved by the FDA for use in adults and children with itching of the eyes due to allergic conjunctivitis.

Zonisamide (Zonegran - Elan Pharma), a sulfonamide chemically unrelated to other antiepileptic drugs, has been approved by the FDA for adjunctive use in adults with partial seizures. Zonisamide has been available in Japan for more than 10 years.

The number of cough remedies available in the USA continues to multiply, but most products contain the same or similar ingredients in varying combinations. Most acute coughs do not require treatment with drugs, especially in children, and suppression of a productive cough may be harmful.

Esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium - AstraZeneca), the S-isomer of omeprazole (Prilosec), is the fifth benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor to become available in the United States. Omeprazole, which was the first, is going off patent this year.

Bosentan (Tracleer - Actelion), a non-peptide endothelin receptor antagonist, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of patients who have pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) with symptoms of dyspnea at rest or with minimal exertion.

Adalimumab (Humira - Abbott), a tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A genetically engineered human IgG1 monoclonal antibody, adalimumab is approved for subcutaneous (SC) injection in adults who have failed at least one disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD), for use either alone or with other DMARDs such as methotrexate (Rheumatrex, and others). Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), an endocrine abnormality characterized by hyperandrogenism and anovulation, affects 5-10% of women of reproductive age in the US. It is often accompanied by obesity and insulin resistance. In recent years, antidiabetic drugs, although not approved for such use by the FDA, have been tried for treatment of this disorder.
