The FDA has approved brigatinib (Alunbrig – Takeda), an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, for treatment of patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have progressed on or are intolerant to crizotinib (Xalkori). Translocations of the ALK gene are found in about 5% of lung cancers; they occur predominantly in nonsmokers with adenocarcinoma. Topiramate (Topamax - Ortho-McNeil) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral use as an adjunct to other drugs in adult patients with partial seizures. Since this diagnostic category includes the largest number of patients with refractory epilepsy, new drugs with antiepileptic activity are usually tried first for this indication. Topiramate (toe pyre' a mate) is a structurally unique agent chemically related to the D-enantiomer of fructose.

Eslicarbazepine acetate (Aptiom – Sunovion) has been approved by the FDA for adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults. New drugs for epilepsy are often approved by the FDA initially only as adjunctive treatment for partial seizures. Eslicarbazepine acetate is a prodrug of eslicarbazepine, which is the S-isomer of the active metabolite of oxcarbazepine. Oxcarbazepine itself is similar to carbamazepine. Both oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine are available generically.

Chemotherapy can result in premature menopause and infertility in young women. Pretreatment fertility counseling followed by appropriate action may prevent some of these undesirable consequences.

The FDA has approved the oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor repotrectinib (Augtyro – BMS) for treatment of locally advanced or metastatic ROS1-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in adults. Repotrectinib is the third oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor to be approved for this indication in the US; crizotinib (Xalkori) and entrectinib (Rozlytrek) were approved earlier.

Zolmitriptan (Zomig - AstraZeneca) nasal spray was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of migraine. It is the second selective serotonin receptor agonist ("triptan") to become available as a nasal spray; sumatriptan has been available in this form since 1997. Some patients with migraine cannot take tablets because of nausea and vomiting, and nasal sprays are more convenient than subcutaneous injections.

The FDA has approved secnidazole oral granules (Solosec – Symbiomix/Lupin) for single-dose treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in adult women.

The FDA has approved Cinvanti (Heron), an IV emulsion formulation of the substance P/neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist aprepitant, for prevention of acute and delayed chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in adults. Aprepitant is also available in oral capsule and suspension formulations (Emend, and generics), and fosaprepitant, a prodrug of aprepitant, is available in an IV formulation (Emend for injection).

The oral kinase inhibitors dabrafenib (Tafinlar – GSK) and trametinib (Mekinist – Novartis) have received accelerated approval by the FDA for use together for a fifth indication: treatment of unresectable or metastatic solid tumors with a BRAF V600E mutation in patients ≥6 years old who have progressed following prior treatment and have no satisfactory alternative treatment options. The injectable glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist tirzepatide, which was approved by the FDA as Mounjaro for treatment of type 2 diabetes in 2022, has now been approved as Zepbound (Lilly) for chronic weight management in adults who have a BMI ≥30 kg/m2 or a BMI ≥27 kg/m2 and at least one weight-related comorbidity.
