Combination oral contraceptives increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Their benefits, in addition to preventing pregnancy, include lowering the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, reducing dysfunctional uterine bleeding and increasing serum hemoglobin concentrations.
