The FDA has approved vonoprazan (Voquezna – Phathom), a potassium-competitive acid blocker, for healing and maintenance of healing of all grades of erosive esophagitis and relief of associated heartburn in adults. Vonoprazan is also available copackaged with amoxicillin (Voquezna Dual Pak) and with amoxicillin and clarithromycin (Voquezna Triple Pak) for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adults.

Rosacea is a common, chronic inflammatory facial eruption of unknown cause. It is more prevalent in women than in men, and disease onset typically occurs after age 30. Rosacea is characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, and flushing, and sometimes by recurrent, progressive crops of acneiform papules and pustules, usually on the central part of the face. Some patients develop granulomas and tissue hypertrophy, which may lead to rhinophyma (a bulbous nose), particularly in men. Blepharitis and conjunctivitis are common. Keratitis and corneal scarring occur rarely.

The FDA has approved osilodrostat (Isturisa – Recordati), a cortisol synthesis inhibitor, for oral treatment of adults with Cushing's disease when surgical resection of the pituitary adenoma is not an option or has not been curative. Osilodrostat is the first cortisol synthesis inhibitor to be approved in the US for this indication. Other oral steroidogenesis inhibitors such as ketoconazole and metyrapone have been used off-label for this indication for many years.

The FDA has approved ponesimod (Ponvory – Janssen), a sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator, for treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome (initial neurological episode), relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS). Lyme disease in the US is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans by Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged [deer] tick) and I. pacificus (western blacklegged tick). Most cases of Lyme disease occur in late spring and early summer in northeastern and mid-Atlantic states, the upper Midwest, and in northern California. B. mayonii, which is also transmitted by I. scapularis, has been shown to cause a similar illness in the upper Midwest.

Pediculosis capitis (head lice infestations) occur in all age groups, but especially in elementary school children. In most cases, transmission occurs by head-to-head contact. Pharmacologic treatment is recommended for persons with live lice or eggs (nits) within 1 cm of the scalp. Topical pediculicides should be tried first. Oral therapy is occasionally required for refractory infestations.

Mild to moderate plaque psoriasis can be treated with topical drugs and phototherapy. Patients with moderate to severe disease generally require systemic therapy. Guidelines for the treatment of psoriasis with topical therapy, phototherapy, and systemic drugs have recently been published.
