The FDA has approved the sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitor tenapanor (Xphozah – Ardelyx) to reduce serum phosphorus in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis as add-on therapy when phosphate binders are ineffective or as monotherapy when phosphate binders cannot be tolerated. Tenapanor is the first NHE3 inhibitor to be approved in the US for hyperphosphatemia. It was previously approved as Ibsrela to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).

Pharmacologic management of chronic heart failure (HF) is primarily determined by the patient's left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and severity of symptoms. Patients with chronic HF who have an LVEF ≤40% are considered to have heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and those with an LVEF ≥50% are considered to have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Patients with an LVEF of 41-49% have heart failure with mildly reduced or mid-range ejection fraction.

The FDA has approved Anjeso (Baudax Bio), an IV formulation of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam, for once-daily treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults. Oral meloxicam (Mobic, and others), which is only indicated for treatment of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, has been available for 20 years. IV formulations of ketorolac, ibuprofen (Caldolor), and acetaminophen (Ofirmev) are also available for treatment of pain.
