In Brief: Dapagliflozin (Farxiga) for Chronic Kidney Disease
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Jul 26, 2021 (Issue 1629)
tract infection, volume depletion,
hypotension, and ketoacidosis in patients with type 2
diabetes ...
The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor
dapagliflozin (Farxiga – AstraZeneca) has been
approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with
chronic kidney disease (CKD) at risk of progression
(not defined in the label). Dapagliflozin is the first
SGLT2 inhibitor to be approved in the US for treatment
of CKD.
Sunscreens
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Jul 26, 2021 (Issue 1629)
tract infection, volume depletion,
hypotension, and ketoacidosis in patients with type 2
diabetes ...
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation
is associated with sunburn, photoaging, and skin
cancer. Sunscreens are widely used to reduce these
risks, but questions remain about their effectiveness
and safety. The FDA has issued a proposed rule that
would require manufacturers to perform additional
safety studies for some sunscreen active ingredients
and would mandate better UVA protection in
sunscreen products. Some sunscreen products
containing FDA-approved active ingredients are
listed in Table 2.
Semaglutide (Wegovy) for Weight Loss

The injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)
receptor agonist semaglutide, previously approved
by the FDA as Ozempic to treat type 2 diabetes and
to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular
events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established
cardiovascular disease, has now been approved in
a higher dose as Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) for chronic
weight management in adults with or without type 2
diabetes who have a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2
or a BMI ≥27 kg/m2 and ≥1 weight-related comorbidity
(e.g., hypertension, dyslipidemia). An oral formulation
of semaglutide...
Sotagliflozin (Inpefa) for Heart Failure
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Jul 24, 2023 (Issue 1681)
ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]) or
type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD ...
The FDA has approved sotagliflozin (Inpefa –
Lexicon), an oral sodium-glucose cotransporter
1 and 2 (SGLT1/2) inhibitor, to reduce the risk of
hospitalization for heart failure (HF), urgent HF visits,
and cardiovascular death in adults with either HF
(with any left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]) or
type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and
other cardiovascular risk factors. Sotagliflozin is
the first dual SGLT1/2 inhibitor to be approved in the
US. Unlike SGLT2 inhibitors, it is not FDA-approved
to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2
diabetes....

diabetes.1 The indication has now ...
The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor
empagliflozin (Jardiance – Boehringer Ingelheim)
was approved by the FDA in 2021 to reduce the
risk of hospitalization for heart failure (HF) and
cardiovascular death in patients with heart failure
with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF; LVEF ≤40%),
regardless of whether or not they have type 2
diabetes. The indication has now been expanded to
include patients with HF with any ejection fraction.
Empagliflozin is the first SGLT2 inhibitor to be
approved in the US for this indication.
A New Indication for Semaglutide (Wegovy)
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Apr 29, 2024 (Issue 1701)
the risk of MACE in adults with type 2 diabetes
and established CVD. The GLP-1 receptor agonists ...
The injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)
receptor agonist semaglutide (Wegovy) has been
approved by the FDA to reduce the risk of major
adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in adults with
established cardiovascular disease (CVD) and either
obesity or overweight. Semaglutide is the first drug
to be approved for cardiovascular risk reduction in
this population. It is also approved in a lower-dose
injectable formulation as Ozempic and in an oral
formulation as Rybelsus (see Table 1).

subcutaneous injection of the glucagon-like peptide 1
(GLP-1) receptor agonist semaglutide (Ozempic – Novo Nordisk), which is FDA-approved for treatment of
type 2 diabetes and to reduce the risk of major adverse
cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes
and established cardiovascular disease, has reduced
