The FDA has approved the interleukin (IL)-6 inhibitor sarilumab (Kevzara – Sanofi/Regeneron) for treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in adults who had an inadequate response to corticosteroids or cannot tolerate a corticosteroid taper. Sarilumab is the first biologic drug to be approved for treatment of PMR; it was previously approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Liraglutide (Victoza – Novo Nordisk), a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist given by subcutaneous injection, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in addition to oral antidiabetic drugs such as metformin (Glucophage, and others) or glimepiride (Amaryl, and others). Liraglutide is not recommended for first-line therapy and is not approved for use with insulin.

Ursodiol (ursodeoxycholic acid), a naturally occurring bile acid, will soon be marketed in the USA as (Ciba-Geigy), an oral drug for dissolution of gallbladder stones. The labeling for the drug, which has been available in other countries for the past ten years, will restrict its use to dissolution of radiolucent, noncalcified gallbladder stones less than 20 mm in diameter in patients who have refused or are at increased risk from surgery.

Zolmitriptan (Zomig - AstraZeneca) nasal spray was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of migraine. It is the second selective serotonin receptor agonist ("triptan") to become available as a nasal spray; sumatriptan has been available in this form since 1997. Some patients with migraine cannot take tablets because of nausea and vomiting, and nasal sprays are more convenient than subcutaneous injections.

Resveratrol is a phytochemical found in the skin of red grapes and in many other plants, including berries, plums and peanuts. As a constituent of red wine, it has been associated with cardioprotective effects. Dietary supplements containing resveratrol are now being widely promoted as antioxidants that can prevent agerelated diseases.

Combination oral contraceptives increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Their benefits, in addition to preventing pregnancy, include lowering the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, reducing dysfunctional uterine bleeding and increasing serum hemoglobin concentrations. Are these benefits worth the risk? And are some combination oral contraceptives safer than others?

The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the investigational long-acting monoclonal antibodies tixagevimab and cilgavimab (Evusheld – AstraZeneca) to be administered concomitantly by IM injection for pre-exposure prophylaxis of COVID-19 in persons ≥12 years old who weigh ≥40 kg and have either a history of severe allergy that prevents their vaccination against COVID-19 or moderate or severe immune compromise (see Table 1). They are the first drugs to be authorized by the FDA for this indication. Two other pairs of antibodies, bamlanivimab plus etesevimab...

Temsirolimus (Torisel - Wyeth), an mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) kinase inhibitor that is metabolized to sirolimus (rapamycin), has been approved by the FDA for intravenous treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma.

Duloxetine (Cymbalta - Lilly) is the second drug to be approved by the FDA for treatment of fibromyalgia. Pregabalin (Lyrica), which is also approved for treatment of neuropathic pain and epilepsy, was the first. Duloxetine is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that is already marketed for treatment of depression and diabetic neuropathy.

Fourteen states in the US - Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington - now permit, or soon will permit, some medical use of marijuana (Cannabis sativa). In some states, licensed facilities dispense botanical cannabis by prescription. In others, limited self-cultivation is permitted for medical use.
