The FDA has approved Roxybond (Daiichi Sankyo), an short-acting (SA) oxycodone formulation with abuse-deterrent properties, for treatment of pain requiring management with an opioid. Roxybond is the first SA opioid to be approved as an abuse-deterrent product. Oxaydo, another IR oxycodone formulation, has properties that discourage its intranasal and intravenous use, but is not considered an abuse-deterrent product by the FDA. Use of opioids for treatment of pain was reviewed in a recent issue.

The FDA has approved darolutamide (Nubeqa – Bayer), an androgen receptor inhibitor, for oral treatment of nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC). Darolutamide is the third androgen receptor inhibitor to be approved for this indication; apalutamide (Erleada) and enzalutamide (Xtandi), which are also approved for use in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), were approved earlier.

Over-the-counter products containing melatonin are widely used as sleep aids in children and adults.

The FDA has approved insulin lispro-aabc (Lyumjev – Lilly), a faster-acting formulation of insulin lispro (Humalog), for treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults. Fiasp, a faster-acting formulation of insulin aspart (Novolog), was approved in 2017.

Tirbanibulin, a microtubule inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA as a 1% ointment (Klisyri – Almirall) for topical treatment of actinic keratosis of the face or scalp.

Givinostat (Duvyzat – Italfarmaco), an oral histone deacetylase inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients ≥6 years old with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), regardless of the DMD-causing mutation. It is the first nonsteroidal drug to be approved for this indication. The oral corticosteroids deflazacort (Emflaza) and vamorolone (Agamree) are also approved for treatment of patients with all genetic variants of DMD.

The FDA has approved Mavyret (Abbvie) and Vosevi (Gilead), two new fixed-dose combinations of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs, for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection caused by any of the six major HCV genotypes in patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis. Both are approved for use in treatment-experienced patients. Mavyret is also approved for treatment-naive patients.

Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is usually empiric, with selected antibiotic regimens directed against some of the most common causative pathogens. Recommended empiric regimens are listed in Table 2; recommended antibiotic dosages for treatment of CAP are listed in Tables 3 and 4. Joint guidelines for treatment of CAP by the American Thoracic Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (ATS/IDSA) were updated in 2019.

Itraconazole (Sporanox - Janssen), an antifungal triazole, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral treatment of histoplasmosis and blastomycosis. These two endemic mycoses occur both in normal hosts and in immunocompromised patients, such as those with AIDS (RW Bradsher, Clin Infect Dis, 14:S82, 1992; LJ Wheat, Clin Infect Dis, 14:S91, 1992).

Lasers have been used in dermatology for many years. Recently, however, improvements in laser technology have led to much wider use of lasers for treatment of cosmetic skin problems. Many different types of lasers are available; the US Food and Drug Administration gives manufacturers permission to market laser systems for specific indications.
