Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory arthropathy associated with psoriasis. A recent review found that about 20% of patients with psoriasis have psoriatic arthritis. Updated guidelines for treatment of psoriatic arthritis have recently been published.

Most respiratory tract infections are caused by viruses. Bacterial respiratory tract infections are usually treated empirically with antibiotic therapy that targets the most probable causative pathogens. Recommended antibiotic regimens for outpatient treatment of some common respiratory tract infections are listed in Table 1 for adults and Table 2 for children.

Levalbuterol, the R-isomer of racemic albuterol, has been approved by the FDA for prevention and treatment of bronchospasm in patients at least 12 years old.

Desloratadine (des lor at' a deen; Clarinex - Schering), an active metabolite of the H1-receptor antagonist loratadine (Claritin), has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria in patients at least 12 years old. The patent for loratadine expires in December 2002, and generic or over-the-counter versions are expected.

Some recently published studies suggest that taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. A relationship between SSRIs and osteoporosis is biologically plausible because bone has serotonin receptors, and SSRI-treated mice have reduced bone mass.

The FDA has approved two new inhalers for long-term maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Seebri Neohaler (Novartis) contains the long-acting anticholinergic glycopyrrolate. Utibron Neohaler (Novartis) contains both glycopyrrolate and the long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) indacaterol. Glycopyrrolate/indacaterol is the third fixed-dose combination of a long-acting anticholinergic and a LABA to become available in the US; umeclidinium/vilanterol (Anoro Ellipta) and tiotropium/olodaterol (Stiolto Respimat) were approved...

The FDA has approved a combination oral contraceptive containing the estrogen estetrol and the progestin drospirenone (Nextstellis – Mithra/Mayne). Estetrol is the first new estrogen to become available in the US in 50 years. Drospirenone is available alone (Slynd) and in combinations with the estrogen ethinyl estradiol for prevention of pregnancy.

The FDA has approved a delayed-release oral formulation of prednisone (Rayos – Horizon Pharma). Rayos is not labeled for any specific indication, but the only published studies of the new product have been in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Brexucabtagene autoleucel (Tecartus – Kite) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with relapsed or refractory B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). It was previously approved for treatment of relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma. Tecartus is an individualized cellular product prepared from the patients own T cells, which are genetically modified to express chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) and then infused back into the patient.
