The FDA has approved Entadfi (Veru), a fixed-dose combination of the 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride and the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor tadalafil, for initial treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate; use of the drug is limited to 26 weeks. Entadfi is the first 5α-reductase inhibitor/PDE5 inhibitor combination to become available in the US. Finasteride (Proscar, and generics) and tadalafil (Cialis, and generics) are also available separately.

Cannabis (marijuana) contains more than 60 pharmacologically active cannabinoids; delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the best known. THC is the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis. CBD, unlike THC, does not produce intoxication or euphoria.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved use of recombinant human interleukin 11 (rhIL-11; oprelvekin; Neumega - Genetics Institute) to increase platelet counts and decrease the need for platelet transfusions in patients with severe thrombocytopenia caused by chemotherapy for nonmyeloid malignancies.

The FDA has approved fixed-dose combinations of metformin with either canagliflozin (Invokamet) or dapagliflozin (Xigduo XR) for treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes not adequately controlled with any one of these drugs, or in those already being treated with both metformin and either canagliflozin or dapagliflozin.

The FDA has approved Plenvu (Salix), a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-containing oral powder for reconstitution, for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy in adults. Plenvu is the first PEG-containing colonoscopy preparation that requires only 1 L of water for dissolution and ingestion of 1 L of clear fluid in addition.

Pharmacologic treatment is recommended for postmenopausal women who have bone density T-scores (standard deviations from normal mean values in the spine, femoral neck, total hip, or distal radius) of -2.5 or below, T-scores between -1.0 and -2.5 with a history of fragility (low-trauma) fracture of the hip or spine, or T-scores between -1.0 and -2.5 with a FRAX 10-year probability of ≥3% for hip fracture or ≥20% for major osteoporotic fracture.

The FDA has warned that the antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing drug lamotrigine (Lamictal, and generics) can rarely cause hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a serious and potentially fatal immune-related reaction.1HLH, which can be familial, occurs most often in infants, but can occur at any age. Once thought to be a beneficial response to critical illness, hyperglycemia is now recognized as independently associated with death and other adverse outcomes in various groups of critically ill patients. The FDA has approved use of lubiprostone (Amitiza) for treatment of opioid-induced constipation in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. The drug was previously approved for chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.
