Astemizole (Hismanal - Janssen), a new antihistamine, was recently marketed in the USA for treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Like terfenadine (Seldane - Medical Letter, 27:65, 1985), astemizole is claimed to be no more sedating than placebo, but the new drug offers the advantage of a once-daily dosage schedule.

(LABA) formoterol (Foradil) has become available in a
single metered-dose inhaler (Dulera – Schering) for
treatment of asthma in patients ≥12 years old. It is the
third corticosteroid/LABA combination inhaler to
become available for this indication in the US. None of
these combinations should be used for initial treatment
of asthma or for acute treatment of asthma symptoms.

Olopatadine hydrochloride (Patanol - Alcon), a propilidinedibenzoxypin derivative, has recently been marketed in a 0.1% ophthalmic solution for prevention of itching due to allergic conjunctivitis in adults and children more than three years old. It is the first drug for this indication that both inhibits mast cell degranulation and is a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist (NA Sharif et al, J Pharmacol Exp Ther, 278:1252, 1996).

The FDA has approved Airsupra (AstraZeneca), a
metered-dose inhaler containing the short-acting
beta2-agonist (SABA) albuterol and the inhaled
corticosteroid (ICS) budesonide, for use as needed for
treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to
reduce the risk of exacerbations in patients ≥18 years
old with asthma. Airsupra is the first combination of
a SABA and an ICS to become available in the US. It is
not approved for use as maintenance therapy.
