The FDA has approved viloxazine extended-release capsules (Qelbree – Supernus) for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6-17 years old. Viloxazine is the second selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor to be approved in the US for treatment of ADHD; atomoxetine (Strattera, and generics) was approved in 2002.

Temafloxacin (Omniflox - Abbott) and lomefloxacin (Maxaquin - Searle) are the latest fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agents to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral treatment of various infections. Previously marketed include norfloxacin (Noroxin - Medical Letter, 29:25, 1987), ciprofloxacin (Cipro - Medical Letter, 30:11, 1988), and ofloxacin (Floxin - Medical Letter, 33:71, 1991). Norfloxacin is marketed only for treatment of urinary tract infections, and lomefloxacin only for treatment of urinary tract infections and bronchitis known to be caused by...

Gabapentin (Neurontin - Pfizer), which has been available in the US since 1994, is approved by the FDA only for treatment of partial epilepsy and postherpetic neuralgia, but is widely used off-label for a number of other indications, especially neuropathic pain syndromes. According to one report, among Medicaid recipients in Florida receiving gabapentin, 71% of prescriptions were for chronic pain and 8% for seizures and neuralgia ("The Pink Sheet" February 2, 2004; 66:30).

The FDA has approved an extended-release tablet formulation of amantadine (Osmolex ER – Vertical/Osmotica) for once-daily treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) in adults. An extended-release capsule formulation of amantadine (Gocovri) was approved in 2017 for treatment of levodopa-induced dyskinesia in patients with PD.

The FDA has approved a new tablet formulation of bromocriptine mesylate (Cycloset – VeroScience) for treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Bromocriptine (Parlodel, and others) is an ergot-derived dopamine agonist that has been used for more than 20 years to treat hyperprolactinemia, acromegaly, Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome.

The FDA has approved the interleukin-1 (IL-1) beta inhibitor canakinumab (Ilaris – Novartis) for treatment of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA; formerly called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or Still’s disease) in children ≥2 years old. Canakinumab was approved earlier for treatment of cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS). Tocilizumab (Actemra), an interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitor that has been available since 2010 for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults, was also recently approved by the FDA for sJIA. The FDA has approved eluxadoline (Viberzi – Actavis), a mu-opioid receptor agonist and delta-opioid receptor antagonist, for oral treatment of adults with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Glimepiride (Amaryl - Hoechst Marion Roussel), a new sulfonylurea similar to glyburide and glipizide (Medical Letter, 26:79, 1984), was recently marketed for treatment of patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) not controlled by diet and exercise. The new drug is the first sulfonylurea approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use concurrently with insulin.

The FDA has approved a once-weekly extendedrelease formulation of exenatide (Bydureon – Amylin), an injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, for treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Methamphetamine, a highly addictive synthetic sympathomimetic, has again become important as a drug of abuse in the US. Its resurgence has been associated with unsafe sexual practices that have resulted in an increase in HIV transmission, particularly among men who have sex with men (SJ Semple et al, J Subst Abuse Treat 2002; 22:149; A Urbina and K Jones, Clin Infect Dis 2004; 38:890).
