Many drugs can cause psychiatric symptoms, but a causal connection is often difficult to establish. Psychiatric symptoms that emerge during drug treatment could also be due to the underlying illness, previously unrecognized psychopathology, or psychosocial factors. The withdrawal of some drugs can cause symptoms such as anxiety, psychosis, delirium, agitation or depression.

In the short time since fluoxetine (Prozac - Lilly) first became available in the USA (Medical Letter, 30:45, 1988), it has become the most frequently prescribed of all antidepressants. Some recent reports, however, have questioned its safety.

The FDA has approved the marketing of extended release (ER) ranolazine (Ranexa - CV Therapeutics) for treatment of chronic angina in patients who have not achieved an adequate response with other antianginal drugs. It should be used in combination with a nitrate, a beta-blocker or the dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker amlodipine (Norvasc), and appears to be more effective in men. The FDA has approved flibanserin (Addyi – Sprout) for treatment of premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) not caused by another medical or psychiatric condition, the effects of another drug, or relationship difficulties. Flibanserin is the first drug to be approved for treatment of HSDD. It is not approved for use in men or postmenopausal women. Previous FDA reviews of flibanserin in 2010 and 2013 did not result in approval.

Sarecycline (Seysara — Allergan), a new oral tetracycline antibiotic, has been approved by the FDA for once-daily treatment of inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne in patients ≥9 years old.

Levalbuterol, the R-isomer of racemic albuterol, has been approved by the FDA for prevention and treatment of bronchospasm in patients at least 12 years old.

Oxcarbazepine, which is chemically similar to carbamazepine, and levetiracetam, a pyrrolidine acetamide chemically unrelated to other antiepileptic drugs, are the sixth and seventh drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in the last five years for oral use in partial seizures.

Pantoprazole, the fourth benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor to become available in the United States, has been marketed for short-term oral treatment of erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The FDA has approved extended-release (ER) calcifediol (25-hydroxyvitamin D3; Rayaldee – Opko), a prohormone of calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D3. It is indicated for treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in adults with stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) who have serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels <30 ng/mL.

The FDA has approved the fixed-dose combination of tezacaftor and ivacaftor (Symdeko – Vertex) for oral treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients ≥12 years old who are homozygous for the F508del (also called Phe508del or ΔF508) mutation or have at least one mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene that is responsive to the combination.
