First approved in 2000 for termination of pregnancies of ≤49 days' gestation, the indication for the oral antiprogestin mifepristone (Mifeprex, and generics) was expanded in 2016 to include pregnancies of up to 10 weeks' gestation. A single 200-mg oral dose of mifepristone followed 24-48 hours later by a single 800-mcg buccal dose of the prostaglandin analog misoprostol terminates early intrauterine pregnancies in about 95% of women.

The FDA has approved a delayed-release oral formulation of prednisone (Rayos – Horizon Pharma). Rayos is not labeled for any specific indication, but the only published studies of the new product have been in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Fluvoxamine maleate, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that has been available for many years in an immediate-release formulation (Luvox, and others) for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adults, has now been approved by the FDA in an extended-release formulation (Luvox CR - Jazz Pharmaceuticals) for treatment of OCD and social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults.

The FDA has approved the marketing of another extended-release brand-name formulation of the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) desvenlafaxine (Khedezla – Par/Osmotica) for treatment of depression. The FDA has approved a new injectable formulation of methotrexate (Otrexup – Antares) for use in rheumatoid arthritis and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and for severe psoriasis in adults. On its web site (www.otrexup.com), the manufacturer states: "Otrexup is the first subcutaneous (SC) methotrexate (MTX) for self-administration delivered once weekly by auto-injector." The FDA has approved the marketing of desvenlafaxine (Pristiq - Wyeth), the main active metabolite of venlafaxine (Effexor, and others - Wyeth), for treatment of major depressive disorder. Venlafaxine, a norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), is available generically as an immediate-release tablet. Venlafaxine extended-release capsules (Effexor XR) are scheduled to go off-patent in 2010.
