Invega Hafyera (Janssen), a long-acting, extended-release (ER) formulation of the second-generation antipsychotic paliperidone palmitate, has been approved by the FDA for twice-yearly IM treatment of schizophrenia in adults who have been adequately treated with another injectable ER formulation of the drug (Invega Sustenna or Invega Trinza). It is the first drug to become available in the US for twice-yearly treatment of schizophrenia.

The oral sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator ozanimod (Zeposia – Bristol Myers Squibb) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. It is the first S1P receptor modulator to be approved for treatment of ulcerative colitis. Ozanimod was approved in March 2020 for use in adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.

The FDA has approved an oral extended-release formulation of gepirone (Exxua – Fabre-Kramer), a selective 5-HT1A receptor agonist, for treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Gepirone was originally developed decades ago for treatment of anxiety and depression, but it was not approved by the FDA for such use. Gepirone is structurally related to buspirone, which is FDA-approved for treatment of anxiety.
