The FDA has approved vonoprazan (Voquezna – Phathom), a potassium-competitive acid blocker, for healing and maintenance of healing of all grades of erosive esophagitis and relief of associated heartburn in adults. Vonoprazan is also available copackaged with amoxicillin (Voquezna Dual Pak) and with amoxicillin and clarithromycin (Voquezna Triple Pak) for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adults.

Ferric carboxymaltose (Injectafer – American Regent) is now FDA-approved for IV treatment of iron deficiency in adults with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II/III heart failure to improve exercise capacity. Iron deficiency is present in approximately 30% of patients with heart failure; it has been associated with reduced quality of life and increased hospitalization and mortality. Injectafer is the first IV iron preparation to be approved for this indication. It was previously approved for treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children and adults.

The FDA has approved the sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitor tenapanor (Xphozah – Ardelyx) to reduce serum phosphorus in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis as add-on therapy when phosphate binders are ineffective or as monotherapy when phosphate binders cannot be tolerated. Tenapanor is the first NHE3 inhibitor to be approved in the US for hyperphosphatemia. It was previously approved as Ibsrela to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).

TThe FDA has licensed mResvia (Moderna), an mRNA respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, for prevention of lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by RSV in adults ≥60 years old. It is the first mRNA vaccine to be licensed in the US for this indication. Two recombinant RSV vaccines, Arexvy and Abrysvo, are also available for prevention of RSV LRTD. Arexvy is approved for use in adults ≥50 years old. Abrysvo is approved for use in adults ≥60 years old and in pregnant women to prevent RSV LRTD in their infants.
