Cilostazol, a phosphodiesterase III inhibitor that has been used in Japan since 1988, has been approved by the FDA for treatment on intermittent claudication due to occlusive peripheral arterial disease.

The FDA has approved 2 new treatments for castration-resistant (formerly called hormone-refractory) prostate cancer. Sipuleucel-T (Provenge – Dendreon) is the first immunotherapy approved for treatment of prostate cancer. Cabazitaxel (Jevtana – Sanofi-Aventis) is approved for second-line treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel (Taxotere).

The FDA has approved vortioxetine (vor" tye ox' e teen; Trintellix – Takeda/Lundbeck), a new serotonergic drug, for treatment of major depressive disorder. Like vilazodone (Viibryd), another serotonergic antidepressant, it has been claimed to have a low incidence of sexual side effects and no significant effect on weight.

Turmeric is a spice derived from the Curcuma longa plant. Dietary supplements and foods containing turmeric are widely promoted for relief of pain and to improve joint mobility, immunity, digestion, cardiovascular health, depression, anxiety, memory, and cognition.

Warfarin sodium (Coumadin, and others) and other coumarin anticoagulants prevent thrombosis, but patient response is highly variable and overanticoagulation can lead to hemorrhage. Genotyping patients for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that affect coumarin metabolism and sensitivity may help clinicians estimate the therapeutic warfarin dose. The FDA has added a note to warfarin labeling recommending lowrange doses for patients with such genetic variations. Commercial tests for these variants are now available and cost about $500 per test.

Tetrabenazine (Xenazine - Ovation Pharmaceuticals), an old drug first synthesized 50 years ago for treatment of schizophrenia, was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease. It has been available in other countries for decades.

The FDA has approved lesinurad (Zurampic – Ironwood), a uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1) inhibitor, for adjunctive treatment of gout-associated hyperuricemia in patients whose serum uric acid levels fail to reach goal with xanthine oxidase inhibitor monotherapy.

The FDA has approved the oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor deuruxolitinib (Leqselvi – Sun) for treatment of severe alopecia areata in adults. Two other oral JAK inhibitors are approved for treatment of severe alopecia areata: baricitinib (Olumiant) is approved for use in adults, and ritlecitinib (Litfulo) is approved for use in patients ≥12 years old.
