Clarithromycin (Biaxin - Abbott) and azithromycin (Zithromax - Pfizer), two macrolide antibiotics chemically related to erythromycin, have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of respiratory, skin, and skin structure infections. Azithromycin has also been approved for treatment of nongonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

Almotriptan (Axert - Pharmacia), and Frovatriptan (Frova - Elan) have been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of migraine headache (Drugs of Choice from The Medical Letter 2001, page 131.).

Millions of people now take herbal products and other "dietary supplements." The Physicians' Desk Reference has published a PDR for Herbal Medicines listing their ingredients and indications, and the Drug Topics Red Book lists their prices.

Adefovir dipivoxil (Hepsera - Gilead), a nucleotide analog, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of chronic active infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). In 1999, because of concerns about renal toxicity, the FDA rejected a higher-dosage formulation of adefovir for treatment of HIV infection.

Daptomycin (Cubicin - Cubist), a cyclic lipopeptide (a new class of antibiotics), has been approved by the FDA for intravenous (IV) treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections. It is being promoted as a once-daily bactericidal alternative to vancomycin (Vancocin, and others) for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureusinfections.

Epinastine HCl, an H₁-receptor antagonist and mast cell stabilizer, has been approved by the FDA for use in a 0.05% ophthalmic solution (Elestat - Allergan/Inspire) for prevention of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The drug is available orally in Europe and Asia.

The FDA has approved calcitriol ointment (Vectical - Galderma), a vitamin D analog, for topical treatment of mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis in adults ≥18 years old. Ointments are generally considered more potent than creams or solutions.

The FDA has approved pralatrexate (Folotyn – Allos), an intravenous (IV) antifolate, for treatment of adults with relapsed or refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). It is the first drug approved by the FDA specifically for this indication.

The FDA has approved indacaterol (in´´ da ka´ ter ol; Arcapta Neohaler – Novartis), an inhaled long-acting beta₂-agonist, for once-daily maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Indacaterol is not approved for treatment of exacerbations of COPD or for treatment of asthma. It has been available in Europe as Onbrez Breezhaler since 2009.

The FDA has approved Duavee (Pfizer), a fixed-dose combination of conjugated estrogens and the new selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) bazedoxifene, for treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms and for prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with an intact uterus. Bazedoxifene is an estrogen agonist/antagonist with estrogen-like effects on bone and antiestrogen effects on the uterus.
