Idarubicin hydrochloride (Idamycin - Adria), an anthracycline structurally related to daunorubicin (Cerubidine, and others) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin, and others), was recently approved in the USA for treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in adults.

Interferon β-1b (Betaseron - Berlex), an analog of human interferon β pro-duced in E. coli, may soon be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), the most common form of the disease (G Mitchell, Med Clin North Am, 77:231, 1993).

Six years after an FDA advisory committee recommended development of a combination tablet containing an oral contraceptive and folic acid,1 the FDA has approved Beyaz (Bayer), a combination of the oral contraceptive Yaz2 with 451 mcg of levomefolate calcium, the primary metabolite of folic acid.3 According to the FDA, an unpublished double-blind, randomized U.S. trial in 379 healthy women 18-40 years old found that the combination increased serum folate levels. The FDA has approved crizotinib (Xalkori – Pfizer), an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, for treatment of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) translocation, which is found in about 4-5% of lung cancers. A diagnostic test (Vysis ALK Break Apart FISH Probe Kit – Abbott Molecular) is available to detect translocations of the ALK gene in tumor samples; these translocations occur predominantly in nonsmokers with adenocarcinoma.

Tafasitamab-cxix (Monjuvi – Morphosys), a CD19-directed cytolytic antibody, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for use in combination with lenalidomide (Revlimid) for treatment of relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, including DLBCL arising from low grade lymphoma, in adults who are not eligible for autologous stem cell transplant. Accelerated approval was based on overall response rates.

The FDA has approved Zepatier (Merck), a fixed-dose combination of two direct-acting antiviral agents — elbasvir, an NS5A inhibitor, and grazoprevir, an NS3/4A protease inhibitor — for oral treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 or 4 infection.

The FDA has approved semaglutide (Ozempic – Novo Nordisk), a long-acting injectable GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist, for once-weekly treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. It is the sixth GLP-1 receptor agonist to be approved in the US.

The oral antimalarial tafenoquine succinate, a long-acting analog of primaquine, has been approved by the FDA in 2 different strengths. Arakoda (100-mg tablets; Sixty Degrees) is indicated for the prophylaxis of malaria in adults. Krintafel (150-mg tablets; GSK) is indicated for the prevention of relapse (radical cure) of Plasmodium vivax malaria in patients ≥16 years old undergoing treatment for acute P. vivax infection.

The FDA has approved tapentadol hydrochloride (Nucynta - Ortho-McNeil Janssen) for oral treatment of moderate to severe acute pain in patients ≥18 years old. It has been classified as a Schedule II controlled substance

The FDA has approved Airsupra (AstraZeneca), a metered-dose inhaler containing the short-acting beta₂-agonist (SABA) albuterol and the inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) budesonide, for use as needed for treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to reduce the risk of exacerbations in patients ≥18 years old with asthma. Airsupra is the first combination of a SABA and an ICS to become available in the US. It is not approved for use as maintenance therapy.
