The FDA has approved ixekizumab (Taltz – Lilly), an injectable humanized interleukin (IL)-17A antagonist, for treatment of adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Ixekizumab is the second IL-17A antagonist to be approved for this indication in the US; secukinumab (Cosentyx – Novartis) was the first.

Granisetron, a serotonin (5-HT) antagonist similar to ondansetron, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for prevention of nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy. Although available in an oral formulation in other countries, granisetron is available here only for intravenous (IV) use.

Bexarotene, a retinoid analog, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for oral treatment of dermatologic manifestations of refractory cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Formoterol fumarate inhalation powder Foradil Aerolizer, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has been approved by the FDA for maintenance treatment of asthma and prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm. The drug has been available in Europe for many years.

Balsalazide disodium (Colazal), a prodrug of mesalamine, was marketed in the US this year for oral treatment of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis. Oral formulations of mesalamine have been available in the US for nine years for treatment and maintenance of remissions and olsalazine, which is a dimer of mesalamine, is marketed for maintenance of remissions but not for treatment. Balsalazide has been available in Europe for four years.

The FDA has approved the interleukin-1 (IL-1) beta inhibitor canakinumab (Ilaris – Novartis) for treatment of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA; formerly called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or Still’s disease) in children ≥2 years old. Canakinumab was approved earlier for treatment of cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS). Tocilizumab (Actemra), an interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitor that has been available since 2010 for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults, was also recently approved by the FDA for sJIA. Ocrevus Zunovo (Genentech), a subcutaneous (SC) formulation of the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody ocrelizumab plus human recombinant hyaluronidase-ocsq has been approved by the FDA for treatment of primary progressive and relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Intravenous ocrelizumab (Ocrevus), which was approved for the same indications in 2017, is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for treatment of MS. Ocrelizumab remains the only drug approved for treatment of primary progressive MS.

Older patients are especially susceptible to drug-induced cognitive impairment. They are more likely to be taking multiple drugs, to have higher blood levels of those drugs because of renal or hepatic dysfunction, and to have pre-existing cognitive problems that make it difficult to detect the role of drugs causing new symptoms or making old ones worse.

The FDA has approved the interleukin (IL)-23 blocker guselkumab (Tremfya – Janssen) for treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Guselkumab is the first selective IL-23 blocker to become available in the US.

The FDA has approved perfluorohexyloctane ophthalmic solution (Miebo – Bausch+Lomb) for treatment of dry eye disease. Available only by prescription, Miebo is the first ophthalmic product to be approved in the US that specifically targets tear evaporation caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. An ophthalmic solution with a similar name, Meibo Tears (Vista), which contains 0.6% propylene glycol, is available over the counter for dry eye relief.
