The FDA has approved Namzaric (Forest), a fixed-dose combination of extended-release (ER) memantine (Namenda XR), an NMDA-receptor antagonist, and donepezil (Aricept, and generics), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, for treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's type dementia in patients previously stabilized on both drugs. The patent for Namenda has recently expired and generic formulations of memantine 5- and 10-mg tablets have been approved.

Colonoscopy remains the preferred method of colorectal cancer screening. Many patients consider cleansing the bowel in preparation for colonoscopy the most unpleasant part of the procedure, but inadequate bowel preparation significantly lowers the diagnostic yield.

Initial treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) depends on the severity of symptoms and whether they are intermittent or persistent (see Table 1).

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for prevention of upper gastrointestinal adverse effects caused by NSAIDs and aspirin, are one of the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs in the US. All PPIs are similarly effective and generally well tolerated, but their long-term use has been associated with a number of safety concerns. Recommendations addressing these concerns have recently been published.

MoviPrep (Salix) is a new polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based bowel cleansing preparation approved for use in adults prior to colonoscopy. It contains ascorbic acid, which acts as an additional cathartic and flavoring agent, and requires a lower volume of fluid (3 L compared to the traditional 4 L) than most other PEG products. HalfLytely is an FDA-approved 2-L PEG product, but it must be taken with bisacodyl.

The FDA has approved the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) esomeprazole strontium for use in adults for the same indications as esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium): treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers, eradication of Helicobacter pylori, and treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions. Atogepant (Qulipta – Abbvie), an oral small-molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist ("gepant"), has been approved by the FDA for prevention of episodic migraine in adults. It is the second oral CGRP receptor antagonist to be approved in the US for this indication; the first was rimegepant (Nurtec ODT), which is also approved for acute treatment of migraine. Parenteral CGRP monoclonal antibodies are approved for prevention of migraine (see Table 3).

The FDA has approved zavegepant nasal spray (Zavzpret – Pfizer) for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Zavzpret is the first nasal spray formulation of a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist ("gepant") to become available in the US.

Sumatriptan was first marketed in the US in 1993 as Imitrex for subcutaneous injection, followed by tablets for oral administration and then by a nasal spray. It is one of seven serotonin receptor agonists (“triptans”) marketed in the US for treatment of migraine, but it is the only one available for subcutaneous injection. Now the FDA has approved Sumavel DosePro> (Zogenix), a needle-free device for delivering sumatriptan succinate to subcutaneous tissue, for treatment of migraine and cluster headache in adults.

The FDA has approved a sublingual tablet (Nocdurna – Ferring) and a nasal spray (Noctiva – Avadel) formulation of desmopressin acetate for treatment of nocturia due to nocturnal polyuria in adults who wake up ≥2 times per night to void. Nocdurna and Noctiva are the first two products to be approved in the US for this indication.
