The FDA has approved Apadaz (KemPharm), a short-acting, fixed-dose combination of benzhydrocodone and acetaminophen, for short-term management (≤14 days) of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. The FDA has approved upadacitinib (Rinvoq – Abbvie), an oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, for treatment of adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have had an inadequate response to or cannot tolerate methotrexate (Trexall, and others). Upadacitinib is the third JAK inhibitor to be approved in the US for treatment of RA; tofacitinib (Xeljanz, Xeljanz XR) and baricitinib (Olumiant) were approved earlier.

The FDA has approved eptinezumab-jjmr (Vyepti – Lundbeck), a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist administered IV once every 3 months, for migraine prevention in adults. It is the fourth monoclonal antibody to be approved for this indication; erenumab (Aimovig), fremanezumab (Ajovy), and galcanezumab (Emgality), which are all given subcutaneously once monthly (fremanezumab can also be given once every 3 months), were approved earlier.

In our article in issue 1564 on Plenvu for colonoscopy preparation (Med Lett Drugs Ther 2019; 61:11), the comparator drug in the DAYB trial was not Prepopik, but rather Citrafleet, a similar sodium picosulfate-based preparation that is not available in the US. Also, we said that Plenvu can be taken as a single- or split-dose regimen; we should have said that it can be taken as two doses in a single day or split over two days.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, often accompanied by bloating. IBS is classified by its predominant bowel symptom: constipation (IBS-C), diarrhea (IBS-D), mixed type (IBS-M), or unclassified (IBS-U). Since the exact cause of IBS is unknown, the goal of treatment is symptom control. Some over-the-counter (OTC) products and prescription drugs for IBS are listed in Tables 1-4. The CDC has issued new recommendations for treatment of gonococcal infection. A single 500-mg IM dose (1000 mg in patients weighing ≥150 kg) of the third-generation cephalosporin ceftriaxone is now the treatment of choice for patients with uncomplicated urogenital, rectal, or pharyngeal gonorrhea.
