On April 13, 2021, the FDA and CDC advised suspending use of the Johnson & Johnson adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccine while the agencies investigate 6 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) and thrombocytopenia that occurred following administration of the vaccine. In an April 14 emergency meeting, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended continuing the suspension until more data become available. About 7 million people in the US have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Treprostinil sodium (tre prost' in il; Remodulin - United Therapeutics), a prostacyclin analogue, has been approved by the FDA for continuous subcutaneous (SC) treatment of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension who have dyspnea on more than minimal exertion (NYHA Class II-IV).

Two portable instruments for monitoring prothrombin time have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Coumatrak (DuPont Pharma) and CoaguChek (Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics) are marketed in the USA only for use by healthcare professionals. In Europe, however, the CoaguChek is also marketed for use by patients. A CoaguChek Plus portable system, which measures activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) as well as prothrombin time, is also available in both Europe and the USA.

Epoprostenol sodium (Flolan - Glaxo Wellcome), also known as prostacyclin, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for continuous intravenous treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension.

Bicalutamide (Casodex - Zeneca), an oral nonsteroidal antiandrogen similar to flutamide (Eulexin - Medical Letter, 31:72, 1989), is now available in the USA for treat-ment of advanced prostate cancer. The drug is recommended by the manufacturer for use concurrently with an analog of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) such as leuprolide (Lupron; Lupron Depot) or goserelin (Zoladex -Medical Letter, 32:102, 1990).

A synthetic form of the protein apoaequorin is the active ingredient in the over-the-counter dietary supplement Prevagen (Quincy Bioscience), which is heavily marketed to improve memory.
