The FDA has approved a sublingual film formulation of the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine (Igalmi — BioXcel Therapeutics) for acute treatment of agitation associated with schizophrenia or bipolar I or II disorder in adults. It is the first alpha-2 agonist and the only sublingual film to be approved for this indication. Dexmedetomidine has been available for many years in an injectable formulation (Precedex) for sedation in the intensive care unit and to facilitate procedures such as mechanical ventilation.

The FDA has approved the recombinant chimeric anti-CD20 antibody ublituximab-xiiy (Briumvi – TG Therapeutics) for IV treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome (initial neurological episode), relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS). The FDA has approved clesrovimab-cfor (Enflonsia – Merck), a long-acting monoclonal antibody, for prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in neonates and infants born during or entering their first RSV season. Clesrovimab is the second drug to be approved for this indication; nirsevimab (Beyfortus), another long-acting monoclonal antibody, was the first. Palivizumab (Synagis), a shorter-acting antibody, is FDA-approved for prevention of severe RSV LRTI in certain high-risk children ≤24 months old.

The main goals of treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations, prevent disease progression, and reduce mortality. GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) guidelines for treatment of COPD were updated recently. Treatment of acute exacerbations is not discussed here. Drugs available for treatment of COPD are listed in Tables 1 and 3.
