Rosacea is a common, chronic inflammatory facial eruption of unknown cause. It is more prevalent in women than in men, and disease onset typically occurs after age 30. Rosacea is characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, and flushing, and sometimes by recurrent, progressive crops of acneiform papules and pustules, usually on the central part of the face. Some patients develop granulomas and tissue hypertrophy, which may lead to rhinophyma (a bulbous nose), particularly in men. Blepharitis and conjunctivitis are common. Keratitis and corneal scarring occur rarely.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common GI condition encountered in the outpatient setting; it affects about 20% of people in the US.

The FDA has approved loteprednol etabonate ophthalmic suspension 0.25% (Eysuvis – Kala) for short-term treatment (≤2 weeks) of dry eye disease. It is the first ocular corticosteroid to be approved for this indication. Other formulations of loteprednol are approved for treatment of steroid-responsive ocular inflammatory conditions, inflammation after ocular surgery, and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.

The FDA has approved Opill (Perrigo), a progestin-only oral contraceptive that contains norgestrel, for sale over the counter (OTC). Opill is the first oral contraceptive to be approved in the US for sale without a prescription. Approval of OTC Opill is intended to increase access to effective contraception and reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies.

Epsolay (Galderma), a 5% benzoyl peroxide cream, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. It is the first product containing benzoyl peroxide to be approved in the US for treatment of rosacea. Benzoyl peroxide formulations approved for acne have been used off-label to treat rosacea for years, but itching and burning have limited their use.

On July 12, 2021, the FDA added a warning to the Fact Sheet for the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccine about an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following administration of the product.

Fitusiran (Qfitlia – Sanofi), a subcutaneously injected, antithrombin-directed, small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA), has been approved by the FDA for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients ≥12 years old who have hemophilia A with or without factor VIII inhibitors or hemophilia B with or without factor IX inhibitors. It is the first antithrombin-lowering therapy to become available in the US for treatment of hemophilia.

Teplizumab-mzwv (Tzield – Provention Bio), an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody, has been approved by the FDA to delay the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes in patients ≥8 years old who have stage 2 type 1 diabetes. It is the first drug to become available in the US that delays the onset of type 1 diabetes.

The FDA has approved Cabtreo (Bausch Health), a gel containing the retinoid adapalene, the oxidizing agent benzoyl peroxide, and the antibiotic clindamycin, for treatment of acne vulgaris in patients ≥12 years old. Cabtreo is the first three-drug topical formulation to become available in the US for treatment of acne.
