Rosacea is a common, chronic inflammatory facial eruption of unknown cause. It is more prevalent in women than in men, and disease onset typically occurs after age 30. Rosacea is characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, and flushing, and sometimes by recurrent, progressive crops of acneiform papules and pustules, usually on the central part of the face. Some patients develop granulomas and tissue hypertrophy, which may lead to rhinophyma (a bulbous nose), particularly in men. Blepharitis and conjunctivitis are common. Keratitis and corneal scarring occur rarely.

The FDA has approved loteprednol etabonate ophthalmic suspension 0.25% (Eysuvis – Kala) for short-term treatment (≤2 weeks) of dry eye disease. It is the first ocular corticosteroid to be approved for this indication. Other formulations of loteprednol are approved for treatment of steroid-responsive ocular inflammatory conditions, inflammation after ocular surgery, and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.

Acne is common among adolescents and adults. Guidelines for treatment of acne were last published by the American Academy of Dermatology in 2016.

The oral kinase inhibitor pemigatinib (Pemazyre – Incyte) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with relapsed or refractory myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms (MLNs) with fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) rearrangements. It is the first targeted therapy to be approved in the US for this indication. The drug received accelerated approval from the FDA in 2020 for treatment of adults with previously treated, unresectable, locally advanced or metastatic cholangiocarcinoma with FGFR2 fusions or other rearrangements.

The tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) tenecteplase (TNKase – Genentech) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of acute ischemic stroke in adults. It is the second tPA to be approved in the US for this indication; alteplase (Activase) was approved in 1996. Tenecteplase was approved in 2000 to reduce the risk of death associated with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

A fixed-dose combination of orphenadrine citrate, aspirin, and caffeine (Orphengesic Forte – Galt; previously available as Norgesic Forte) has been approved as a prescription drug by the FDA for treatment of mild to moderate pain caused by acute musculoskeletal disorders. Single-ingredient generic orphenadrine citrate is available by prescription in oral and injectable formulations and has been used for years as an adjunct for treatment of acute musculoskeletal pain. Orphengesic Forte is being marketed as a non-opioid alternative for pain relief.
